PETALING JAYA: One-third of engineers in Malaysia received starting salaries of less than RM2,000 per month, according to human resources minister V Sivakumar, quoting a study by the Malaysian Board of Engineers in 2021.
He said his ministry encouraged companies hiring engineers to set the starting salary at between RM2,500 and RM3,500 or higher, depending on the employer’s capability.
Citing a Treasury circular on consultant services which outlines a RM3,335 maximum basic salary for consultant engineers, Sivakumar said this should be a point of reference for employers, along with annual salary increments for their engineers.
Sivakumar’s remarks were made in a written reply in the Dewan Rakyat today. -FMT
