BN candidate withdraws petition to nullify Harapan's Segamat win

BN candidate M Ramasamy has withdrawn an election petition to quash Pakatan Harapan’s victory in Segamat during the 15th general election.

Election Court judge Rohani Ismail this afternoon allowed Ramasamy’s application to discontinue the petition that named Segamat MP R Yuneswaran as respondent.

Ramasamy’s counsel Muhammad Shafee Abdullah told Malaysiakini that his client discontinued the election petition as both Ramasamy and Yuneswaran are now part of the federal coalition government.

“It was done for the mutual benefit as both of them (Ramasamy and Yuneswaran) are part of the unity government,” the lawyer said, adding that Rohani made no order as to costs.

When reached out, Yuneswaran’s counsel Lai Yi Leong confirmed the outcome.

In last November’s general election, Yuneswaran emerged the victor in Segamat with 5,669 votes ahead of the MIC candidate and two others.

Through the election petition (now discontinued), Ramasamy claimed that Yuneswaran had “corruptly” given food to voters during an event at the Chinese temple in Johor to influence them.

The BN candidate lodged a police report on the matter, accusing Yuneswaran and his agents of violating election rules on campaign material.

Apart from this, he also claimed the Harapan candidate distributed food parcels to voters when campaigning. - Mkini
