Abang Johari: Sarawak must be strongest state for next 50 years

Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Openg has called for the grooming of the state’s young leaders who can help it to become a formidable force.

At the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Chinese New Year celebration held in conjunction with its 65th-anniversary dinner in Sibu last night, he said Sarawak must mould itself into the strongest state in Malaysia in the next 50 years.

“Now is the digital era – now is not the era of crude oil, but the renewal energy era. Meaning our younger generation has not gone through what was faced by our forefathers 65 years ago… their aspirations are different, and so, our party has to adjust to the new era.

“We have to groom our young leaders because they are going to be the leaders of the third generation of Sarawakian Malaysians. Meaning, our policy now – we must lay the foundation for the young.

“And Sarawak must be the strongest state in Malaysia for the next 50 years,” he said, according to a report by the Borneo Post.

The GPS coalition leader said Sarawak must plan for the future with environmentally friendly policies, adding that even banks have incorporated environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors into loan applications.

Even globally, the world wants industries that have ESG, he added.

GPS leaders have to know this so that the economy is run smoothly and Sarawak can move forward in the new environment, said the premier.

Abang Johari has pledged his coalition’s support to the Madani administration of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim until the end of the current term and he urged voters to back stability and unity.

“We must have united and conducive politics, with leaders working together and no personal agenda. Our agenda is the Sarawak agenda, and GPS will stick to this,” he said. - Mkini
