17-year-old girl drowns while doing laundry at Keningau river

KOTA KINABALU: A 17-year-old girl drowned after she slipped into a river in Keningau while washing clothes at the riverbank on Wednesday (Feb 28).

The body of victim Juliana Gabriel, was retrieved by rescuers about 10 feet from where she was reported to have slipped at Sungai Ansip there.

The Fire and Rescue Department received the emergency call earlier at 6.12pm, where a witness saw the incident before reporting it.

“A team from Keningau Fire and Rescue station went to the scene and conducted a surface search as well as diving under the water at the area where she was reported missing.

“The body was found at the river level with 10-feet depth, and the teenager was pronounced dead by the police on site.

“Her body was handed over to the police for further actions and the operation ended at 9.20pm,” said the department spokesman. - Star
