Anwar hits back at apologists: 'So old people can steal, rape?'

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim lashed out at those who argue that certain individuals should not be investigated for alleged corruption because of their advanced age.

He said there are even MPs who supported such people on the grounds that it was pitiful to see them hauled up.

“So, can old people rob? Old people can rape? Where did you learn this from?” he asked during a speech in Permatang Pauh, Penang.

Reiterating his stand that there would be no compromises in cracking down on corruption and that his fingerprints are not behind MACC’s actions, Anwar said there is no element of revenge but rather the desire to free the nation of such crimes.

Urging the authorities not to be afraid in investigating cases of corruption, the prime minister stressed that age and position should not be used as excuses.

“If a person is corrupt, the person should be worried. Otherwise, there is nothing to be afraid of.

“There are those whose corruption runs into tens of billions, but are untouchable. When a police sergeant (accepts) RM200 (in bribe), people are livid. I am not saying it is right (to accept bribes) but wrong is wrong.

“However, there are those who take RM10 billion but cannot be touched because (the person) has power…

“(When action is taken), it is said to be revenge, old case.

“If you had taken RM200, I will forgive you. However, an old case involving RM20 billion, that is not my money, it is the people’s money,” he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.

Former finance minister Daim Zainuddin

Previously, former finance minister Daim Zainuddin and his wife Na'imah Abdul Khalid had accused the prime minister of settling old scores when MACC launched an investigation into their wealth.

On Jan 23, Naimah, 68, was charged with failing to declare her assets to the anti-graft commission.

MACC has also ordered former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s sons, Mirzan and Mokhzani, to declare their assets. - Mkini
