Bersatu’s Zulkafperi Hanapi - who is now backing Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim - said the party’s attempt to amend its constitution is to intimidate the six parliamentarians who have switched support.
The Tanjung Karang MP claimed that the same action also targets other Bersatu representatives who are planning to follow in the same footsteps.
Bersatu, Zulkafperi (above) said, seems to be responding to claims that more MPs from the party will be declaring their support for Anwar.
“What is being done is part of the agenda to intimidate and block those who are thinking of changing their support,” he was quoted as saying by Berita Harian at a press conference last night.
Bersatu is expected to amend its party constitution during a special general assembly on March 2.
This comes after six Bersatu MPs switched allegiance and declared support for Anwar without quitting the party to avoid triggering the anti-hopping law.
They are Zulkafperi, Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), Mohd Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), and Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan).
On Jan 26, Syed Abu Hussin claimed that about 10 more Bersatu MPs are expected to declare their support for Anwar.
Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin, on Jan 29, said his party has agreed to amend Article 10 of the party’s constitution to keep its elected representatives in line.
ROS final arbiter
Zulkafperi asserted the party constitutional amendment would not apply to him and five other Bersatu MPs, who are now supporting Anwar.
However, he said the matter would be handled by their lawyers.
“The (party) constitution that will be amended (on March 2) should be forward-looking. Those that have happened in the past will not be binding.
“They may change anything (they want) but ultimately, the Registrar of Societies will determine whether the amendment is acceptable or can be done.”
