Daim not Muda's 'godfather' - party president

Muda acting president Amira Aisya Abd Aziz today denied that former finance minister Daim Zainuddin was the party’s “godfather”.

However, she stopped short of denying allegations that the tycoon had given money to the party.

“Anyone who wants to say that Daim is Muda’s ‘godfather’ or biggest funder… That is definitely not true,” she was quoted as saying by Free Malaysia Today.

She did not disclose how much money, if any, had been donated by Daim.

However, Amira was cited as saying that Muda has a strict funding structure in which a donor can only contribute a maximum of RM200,000 at any one time.

“If anyone wants to question Muda about our political funding, we have been very consistent in saying that Malaysia needs a political funding Act. All the other parties should (push for this) too,” she added.

Meanwhile, she said Daim was not a Muda member but his wife, Na'imah Abdul Khalid, was.

The youth-based party does not have an age limit on membership.

Speculation about the Daim family’s involvement in Muda had peaked after Amira was spotted among Na’imah’s entourage when the latter was charged with not disclosing her assets to the MACC.

Commenting on this, the Muda acting president confirmed that she was there to support Na’imah as a party member.

“I will pay this (same) respect to any party member. She (Na’imah) is also a personal friend of mine,” she said.

Both Daim and his wife are being probed by the MACC over their wealth.

Both have been charged with failure to comply with an MACC notice requiring them to declare their assets to the graftbuster. - Mkini
