Dr M's sons: We're collating 43 years of info, patience please

Collating 43 years’ worth of information is an “impossible endeavour” and “we ask for patience and understanding”, said former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s sons.

Both Mokhzani (above, left) and Mirzan were responding to MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki, who said the pair has yet to submit their declaration of assets.

In a statement this evening, the brothers pointed out that MACC had given them 30 days to comply with the request.

“MACC has requested a list of assets going back to 1981, the year our father Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad became prime minister.

“We are in the midst of compiling available information and engaging with relevant parties to assist and advise us on the process,” they added.

The brothers said to avoid any misrepresentation or prejudgement, it would be appropriate for all parties to apply restraint when commenting on this case.

“Especially, when we have not been informed of the specifics of the investigation other than it pertains to our father.

“The task at hand in collating 43 years’ worth of information is an impossible endeavour and we ask for patience and understanding to address MACC’s request,” they added in the statement issued through the legal firm Zharif Nizamuddin.

On Tuesday, Azam warned the brothers that the pair could face legal action if they failed to declare their assets.

He said notices under Section 36 of the MACC Act were sent to them, but no response has been received.

Azam also indicated that the brothers could request more time once the notice period expires in the middle of this month.

MACC called up Mirzan and Mokhzani for questioning last month, although the exact nature of their investigation is unclear.

Section 36 of the MACC Act requires recipients to comply with any notices issued by the commission.

This includes but is not limited to requests by the MACC to declare assets.

Failure to comply can be punished with up to five years in jail and a fine of up to RM100,000.

Previously, former finance minister Daim Zainuddin and his wife Na’imah Abdul Khalid were also charged with failure to comply with a notice requiring them to disclose their assets. - Mkini
