Ex-Sarawak MP sworn in as Senate president, first Dayak to hold post

Former Sarawak lawmaker Mutang Tagal has been sworn in as the new Senate president.

The former Bukit Mas MP, who is of Lun Bawang descent, is the first Dayak to hold this office.

The Dewan Negara president post became vacant after Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar resigned last month to become the Sarawak governor.

Mutang was the sole candidate for speaker nominated to replace Wan Junaidi, meaning he was appointed without challenge from the opposition, during the special Senate sitting today.

The 70-year-old was a two-term MP for Bukit Mas from 1982 to 1990.

In 2017, he was appointed the Honorary Consul of Romania in Sarawak.

In his commencement speech today, Mutang said Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Openg nominated him to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim as the candidate for Senate president.

He also pledged to carry on ongoing efforts to strengthen Parliament, including the planned revival of the Parliament Services Act and improvements to the standing orders.
