Govt to discuss with Penang House of Music on help needed

The government is looking into possibly assisting Penang House of Music (PHoM) to maintain its operations after the music gallery and museum said it was set to close its doors.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said he had asked the chairperson of MyCreative Ventures, the government agency in charge of advancing the creative industry through strategic and innovative investments, to reach out to PHoM owner Paul Augustin.

“We are trying to see how to assist (PHoM). It is just that some of this (problem) is financial.

“The Penang government has assisted them for many years, but we need to have some detailed discussions with PHoM to see how they can be sustainable moving forward,” Fahmi was quoted as saying by Free Malaysia Today.

On Tuesday, Augustin said his announcement on PHoM’s impending closure had prompted overwhelming responses, including a call from Fahmi to see what could be done.

PHoM started operating at the famed Komtar Tower on Nov 21, 2016 and reportedly received an average of 10,000 foreign and local visitors annually.

The project was initially awarded a grant of RM3 million over three years through the state government and the Penang Water Supply Corporation.

In a Facebook post announcing the closure, PHoM cited financial struggles and a lack of institutional support for the move. - Mkini
