Hamzah denies meeting Anwar to negotiate government post

Hamzah Zainudin said other party leaders had also taken a religious oath to declare that they had not met Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to ask for favours.

KUALA LUMPUR: Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin has denied meeting Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at his office to negotiate for a government post, saying such claims were slanderous.

He also revealed that other party leaders had also taken a religious oath to declare that they had not met Anwar for similar reasons.

Last Tuesday, a well-placed source told FMT that a prominent Bersatu leader was seen at the Prime Minister’s Office and was said to be negotiating the “survival” of some party leaders till the next Bersatu elections.

The source claimed that the Bersatu leader who visited Perdana Putra vowed to deliver more Bersatu MPs to the government.

An aide to Hamzah subsequently denied that the leader in question was the Larut MP.

Today, Hamzah denied he was the leader referred to in the report.

“This is slander. I would like to inform you that I have never met Anwar since he became prime minister,” he said at a press conference.

He also said Bersatu leaders took a religious oath at the party’s Supreme Council meeting.

“All those who were accused swore in God’s name that they had never met Anwar.”

Hamzah said Bersatu would take legal action against its MPs who “abandoned” the party by expressing support for the unity government.

“We have appointed lawyers for this purpose.”

To date, six Bersatu MPs have declared their support for Anwar, citing the welfare of their constituents.

They are Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan), Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), and Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjong Karang).

Hamzah also revealed some of the portfolios opposition MPs will be heading in its shadow Cabinet.

Terengganu menteri besar and Kemaman MP Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar will head the higher education portfolio, while Bachok MP Syahir Sulaiman will be in charge of the economy portfolio. - FMT
