The issue of whether Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin is eligible to run for party president or not does not arise as he has never indicated a desire for the top party position, said Bersatu supreme council member Saifuddin Abdullah.
"To the best of my knowledge, Hamzah (above) has never expressed his intention to contest against Muhyiddin Yassin as Bersatu president.
"So, there should not even be a question of (whether) he is eligible or not to run (for president)," Saifuddin told Malaysiakini.
Saifuddin was commenting on speculations surrounding Hamzah’s alleged readiness to rise within Bersatu and challenge Muhyiddin.
Last November Muhyiddin announced that he would not defend the presidency at the party's annual general assembly, before withdrawing the decision the next day citing his wife's request that he remain in the post for at least one more term.
As a result, there were rumours that Hamzah would be the next presidential candidate if Muhyiddin intends to step down.
‘No need to amend party constitution’
Earlier, Free Malaysia Today cited internal party sources claiming that Hamzah was not eligible to contest in the upcoming party polls.
This is as the party's constitution states that only two-term supreme council members are allowed to run for the party's five highest positions.
According to the source, the only way to allow the Larut MP to run is to amend the party's constitution.
Bersatu supreme council member Razali Idris confirmed the conditions stipulated in the party's constitution but refused to comment further.
At the same time, he said there was no need to amend the party's constitution.
"That's right (conditions in the constitution), but there is no need (to amend the constitution)," he said in a brief message to Malaysiakini.
The Bersatu information chief also agreed that there had never been an issue regarding Hamzah's desire to run for the presidency.
Hamzah was appointed as Bersatu’s secretary-general in March 2020, replacing Marzuki Yahya who was removed from the position. - Mkini
