Ismail Sabri returns to school, ex-aide to supervise Covid-19 thesis

Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who had the shortest stint as prime minister with just 15 months, announced that he is pursuing his studies at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM).

His former special officer Kamarul Zaman Yusoff, who is a UUM senior lecturer, is his thesis supervisor.

In a post on social media, the former premier said he had received his student card.

“Alhamdulillah, I received my student card today. It’s official, today marks the day I become a student. It’s unexpected that I would be a student despite my age.

“This is what lifelong learning means,” added the 64-year-old politician.

Ismail became the ninth prime minister following the resignation of his predecessor Muhyiddin Yassin. He was succeeded by Anwar Ibrahim after the last general election.

Ismail, who obtained a law degree from Universiti Malaya in the 1980s, said he has submitted his research proposal for his PhD.

“My thesis is on Malaysia’s actions to combat Covid-19.

“Malaysia was recognised by the World Health Organization as among the best in tackling Covid-19,” he added.

Ismail noted that no nation can be cited as an example in dealing with the pandemic because it was unprecedented for all countries.

“I hope the world can see Malaysia’s experience and actions taken to battle Covid-19,” he added.

A screenshot included in Ismail’s Facebook post of his announcement listed Kamarul as his thesis supervisor.

Kamarul’s appointment as Ismail's special officer was initially not made known to the public until May 2022, five months after he was appointed.

He was most infamous for being a DAP critic and coined the term “Prof Kangkung”.

He has been in several legal tussles with Pakatan Harapan leaders namely Amanah communications director Khalid Samad, Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng, Bukit Bendera MP Syerleena Abdul Rashid, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, and DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang. - Mkini
