Malaysians reprimanded for waving national flag at Taj Mahal

 

The women and their tour guide were reportedly unaware that it was an offence to display a national flag at Taj Mahal in India.

PETALING JAYA: Six Malaysian women were reprimanded for waving the Malaysian flag at the Taj Mahal in Agra, India.

According to Hindustan Times, the incident occurred at 8am yesterday when the women were seen entering the popular tourist destination with a local tour guide and holding up the Jalur Gemilang.

The English-language daily newspaper said this was a violation of the Taj Mahal’s promotional, commercial and canvassing regulations.

A video of the women holding the national flag went viral.

Archaeological Survey of India senior conservation assistant Prince Vajpayee said the women and their tour guide were unaware of the rule and later issued a written apology.

“On being questioned, they said they did not know about restrictions on canvassing or promotional activities at the Taj Mahal,” he said.

Hindustan Times reported that while such incidents occur at times due to the Taj Mahal’s popularity, strict security measures had been enforced to ensure these restrictions were adhered to.

An ivory-white mausoleum, the Taj Mahal was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan to house the tomb of his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

The mausoleum is at the centre of 17ha of formal gardens with a mosque and guest house. - FMT
