Condolences have poured in from ministers for the passing of former Sarawak governor Abdul Taib Mahmud today.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his deputies Fadillah Yusof and Ahmad Zahid Hamidi described it as a great loss to Sarawak and the country.

In a message on Facebook, Anwar expressed his condolences to the people of Sarawak for the loss.

"Saddened by the passing of Taib early this morning.

“We, especially the people of Sarawak, lost a respected statesman," he said.

Taib’s deeds and services to the country and Sarawak will be remembered forever, Anwar added.

Fadillah, in expressing his condolences on Facebook, had kind prayers for Taib.

"Saddened by the passing of the statesman Abdul Taib Mahmud, former Sarawak governor and chief minister early this morning at a hospital in Kuala Lumpur.

"His death is a great loss not only for Sarawak but also for the country. He had also served as a minister at the federal level before returning to Sarawak.

“Ya Allah, the Almighty... forgive him," he said.

Zahid shared fond memories of his character and prayed for Taib as well.

“A great loss for the people of Malaysia, especially the people of Sarawak, because he played a very important role in governing and driving the success of Sarawak.

"I have too many memories with him. He was an approachable person and always concerned for the people. May Allah accept all his deeds and place him among the pious and in the jannah,” Zahid said.

Significant contribution

The Madani government spokesperson also expressed condolences to Taib’s family.

Fahmi Fadzil said the former Sarawak chief minister had contributed significantly to the development and modernisation of the state.

"We are deeply saddened by his passing... and it's also important for us to remember his contributions," he told Bernama Radio.

The communications minister shared that the National Unity Week 2023 event held in Kuching last May was his last meeting with Taib.

"He appeared to be frail, but he continued his work steadfastly at that time," Fahmi said.

Taib, 87, died at a hospital in Kuala Lumpur at 4.40am today.

The funeral arrangements will be carried out at the National Mosque before Taib’s remains are brought back to Kuching, Sarawak for burial.
