Nga's car tailgating ambulance: DPP tells cops to get more info

Investigation papers on the case of Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming’s car tailgating an ambulance were submitted to the deputy public prosecutor’s office on Feb 13, said Perak police.

However, the DPP has instructed the police to obtain more information.

“Several instructions were given to the investigating officer. The investigation papers will be re-submitted (to the DPP) in the near future,” Perak police chief Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said.

The Feb 3 tailgating incident had gone viral on social media, following which, police recorded a statement from Nga’s driver.

At the time, the ambulance was headed to the scene of an accident along the North-South Expressway between Simpang Pulai and Tapah.

The case is being investigated under Rule 9(2) of the Road Traffic Rules 1959, which stipulates that drivers must give way to emergency vehicles with sirens on.

Full cooperation

On Feb 9, Nga said he was prepared to cooperate with the authorities on the matter and to settle any compound fine imposed on his driver for the offence.

The DAP vice-chairperson revealed that he was on his way to attend an official programme in Ipoh at the time of the incident.

“I stress that I have always given priority to rescue efforts and did not intend to break the law.

“I have ordered my officer to give full cooperation to the authorities and am prepared to settle any fine imposed on my driver if he is found to have committed an offence,” he added.

Nga said when his driver became aware that an ambulance was behind the car, he allowed it to pass the vehicle.

“Since the road was congested, my driver had to tailgate the ambulance while looking for space to continue the journey to Ipoh,” he explained. - Mkini
