Parliament: No motion to challenge PM submitted after Dubai Move fiasco

No lawmaker has submitted a motion of no confidence against Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in the upcoming Parliament session.

This was despite intense speculation in December and January about the opposition mustering support to oust Anwar through what some dubbed the Dubai Move.

Dewan Rakyat speaker Johari Abdul confirmed the lack of a challenge against the premier during a media briefing today.

"I have received some enquiries from you (journalists). No, there is none," Johari (above) said when asked whether any confidence motions had been submitted.

The Dewan Rakyat will convene next Monday, Feb 26, starting with the royal address from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

In December, it was alleged that Perikatan Nasional leaders had met with those on the government bench to plot defections.

Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi claimed that the plot was real, while multiple PN leaders denied its existence.

The government has 147 MPs, just one shy of a two-thirds majority.

Bersatu MPs in support of Anwar

Six Bersatu MPs have also declared support for Anwar, although this has yet to be put to a test during a bloc vote.

The last motion of confidence in Parliament was in December 2022, when Anwar sought to solidify his position as prime minister.

The motion passed with a voice vote, with the opposition declining to call for a bloc vote.

PM Anwar Ibrahim

On the position of the six Bersatu MPs who switched allegiances, Johari indicated that they would not need to vacate their seats.

This is because while they supported Anwar, they had not quit their party. Therefore, they were not in violation of anti-hopping provisions.

Johari had previously facilitated three Bersatu MPs in relocating their seats in the Dewan Rakyat after they threw their support behind Anwar.
