RM16 for a cup of hot Milo: Restaurant in hot water over exorbitant beverage price

JOHOR BARU: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) will be conducting an investigation into a premise following an RM16 ‘hot milo’ case that went viral on Facebook.

The ministry's state director Lilis Saslinda Pornomo said that the initial investigation revealed that the incident occurred at a restaurant of a beach resort and spa in Kota Tinggi.

“Based on the receipt that was uploaded on social media on Feb 14, the restaurant is located in Desaru, Kota Tinggi. However, we need to conduct a thorough investigation into this before we can come up with a report.

“We need to find out if there are elements of profiteering and whether the price of the goods was displayed,” she said when contacted here on Saturday (Feb 17).

Lilis added that the investigation will be conducted under Section 21 of the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act of 2011.

“If such elements are found, the next step is for us to issue a notice under the same act where the premise owner must explain the matter before we can issue any action,” she explained.

At the same time, Lilis also urged public members to lodge any reports directly with the ministry if they ever come across any cases of profiteering.

“Although no official report was lodged with us, we will still investigate this case. We hope to be able to investigate at an early stage, not when the cases have gone viral.

“We need cooperation and to hear the stories from both parties so that we can come up with a fair solution,” she added.

Earlier, a Facebook user under the name ‘Emoncs Tay’ uploaded a receipt from a restaurant showing a hot milo with a price tag of RM15.90. - Star
