PETALING JAYA: A bachelor of education degree programme in the Iban language will be introduced by Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) next year to help overcome a shortage of Iban teachers.

The deputy vice-chancellor, Ahmad Hata Rasit, said the degree course will begin in the 2025-2026 academic year, and will be offered by the education, language, and communications faculty, the Borneo Post reported.

“The faculty is currently working on establishing the Department of Bornean Languages, which will encompass languages like Iban, Bidayuh, Melanau, and the Sarawak Malay dialect,” he said.

The decision was made following discussion with deputy chief minister Douglas Uggah Embas, who is also the university’s pro-chancellor.

He said Unimas will also introduce another Iban language programme, Bahasa Iban for the Communication Profession, as an elective course during the first semester of the current academic year.

Last month, Uggah proposed that universities in the region provide Iban language courses to meet demand.

He said he would discuss the matter with both the education ministry and Unimas, citing shortages in primary and secondary schools within the state. - FMT
