Former Padang Serai MP N Surendran has quit PKR, citing the party’s failure to represent change and reform as a reason for his departure.
The quit notice came as part of a social media retort by Surendran to the party’s information chief Fahmi Fadzil who today reminded him to practise party discipline when expressing discontent.
“Fahmi, never mind party discipline. I’ve not been an active party member for a long time anyway.
“I asked about the reforms PKR once promised. No decent answer to that,” said Surendran on social media platform X.
“There is no point in being a member of a party that no longer represents change and reform.
“Take this as my resignation,” said Surendran, who served as the Padang Serai MP from 2013 to 2018.
This comes after the former PKR vice-president openly criticised Pakatan Harapan leaders for being silent on the sedition probe against former Damansara MP Tony Pua.
Surendran lamented the “shameful” silence of Harapan leaders on the probe against Pua under the Sedition Act 1948, over Facebook posts criticising the Pardons Board’s decision to reduce former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak’s prison sentence.
“Sedition probe on Pua, yet Harapan/DAP mostly silent - quite shameful.
“How low my old comrades have sunk,” posted Surendran who is seen as allied to fellow human rights lawyer Latheefa Koya, who quit the party in 2019, when she was appointed MACC chief by then prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Fahmi, in reminding Surendran to stick to party discipline, called him an old friend and noted that he was not nominated to contest in the recent general election.
“Nevertheless, I take note of his opinion.
“In PKR and Harapan we hold onto principles, but at the same time, we also have party discipline,” Fahmi said during a press conference at the Communications Ministry in Putrajaya today. - Mkini
