A tourism union has condemned the manner in which Tourism Malaysia director-general Ammar Abd Ghapar was terminated from his position.
Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board Employee Union (KPPLPPM) president Alwi Shakir Abdullah said the five-day notice given to Ammar (above) gives a bad image and perception.
"We think a fairer amount of time should be given to preserve harmony not only in the agency but among industry players.
"KPPLPPM is of the view that a circular or instruction regarding an exchange, secondment or termination without reasonable cause needs to contain a clause regarding the notice period of at least a month or more to prevent recurrence, and also to dispel negative perceptions of civil servants," Alwi said in a statement.
Alwi, who is also the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) vice-president, further called for the return of the Civil Servant Tribunal so that those who feel mistreated can represent themselves in the matter.
"KPPLPPM is ready to meet the minister soon to get clarification on the matter."
Alwi was commenting on the termination of Ammar - the letter which was spread on social media.
Ammar reportedly told Malay Mail that he received a termination notice from his post from the office of Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister Tiong King Sing yesterday morning.
The letter was dated Feb 22, and the termination is effective Feb 26, with no reasons stated.
According to Ammar, the letter also did not say where he would be transferred next, and to what post - with almost a year more left before his retirement.
Tourism Malaysia is formed under the Tourism Promotions Board Act.
Section 10 of the Act allows the tourism minister to appoint a director-general to the board on terms and conditions determined by the minister. - Mkini
