Women in workforce trending upwards, says Noraini

Noraini Ahmad said Malaysia is ranked eighth out of 10 in Asean, according to data from the International Labour Organization, for participation of women in the labour market.

KUALA LUMPUR: There are still far fewer women in the workforce than men, despite an upward trend in recent years, says Muslim World Women’s Summit president Noraini Ahmad.

According to Noraini, as of June last year, 56.3% of women entered the workforce, up from 55.5% in 2020 and 55.9% last year.

“Compared with the male workforce participation rate of 82.9%, women still lag far behind. Additionally, the percentage of women in the labour market is much lower than that of our regional neighbours.

“Malaysia is ranked eighth out of 10 Asean countries in the International Labour Organization (ILO) 2022 report.

“Laos leads the way with 74.8%, followed by Cambodia at 74%, Vietnam at 69.6%, Singapore 59.4% and Thailand at 59%,” the deputy women, family and community development minister said on Bernama TV’s “Apa Khabar Malaysia” programme today.

As such, she said the government has implemented several initiatives to increase female workforce participation, including extending tax incentives for women returning to work until Dec 31, 2027 as well as raising the childcare allowance.

“Looking at the initiatives, the government has set a target to increase female workforce participation across different sectors to 60% by the end of this year,” she said. - FMT
