PETALING JAYA: All 10 Malaysians hospitalised after Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 hit turbulence on Tuesday are in stable condition, Malaysia’s ambassador to Thailand, Jojie Samuel, said.

He said he had met with six of the Malaysian passengers at Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital in Bangkok, and that they are conscious and some are able to walk, Bernama reported.

“Most of them suffer from spinal injuries and they have undergone MRI and CT scans, but I was unable to meet with the flight attendant who had surgery today.

“We were informed that he is in a stable condition, despite needing surgery,” he said.

Jojie said the Malaysian embassy was arranging for the family of the flight attendant to visit him this evening.

“We are also providing assistance to the families of the other Malaysians,” he said.

He said the embassy will stay in constant communication with the Singapore embassy and SIA to ensure the care of all the patients.

He also said the remaining three Malaysians will be discharged from the hospital soon.

“We were told they are not in critical condition and they will be discharged,” he said.

Sixteen Malaysians were among the 211 passengers and 18 crew members on board SQ321 travelling from London to Singapore when it encountered sudden extreme turbulence over the Irrawaddy Basin at 37,000ft about 10 hours after departure.

The pilot declared a medical emergency and diverted the Boeing 777-300ER aircraft to Bangkok, landing at 3.45pm local time on Tuesday.

One passenger died and several others suffered multiple injuries. Suvarnabhumi International Airport director Kittipong Kittikachorn said the 73-year-old British man reportedly died of a heart attack. - FMT
