Cops say 'assault' case remains open, probe ongoing

The case involving a deaf e-hailing driver who was allegedly assaulted by a royalty’s escort remains under active investigation, said Kuala Lumpur police chief Rusdi Mohd Isa.

He clarified that the authority to “settle” or close such cases does not lie with the police.

“It is not within our power (to close the case), we have to refer to the Deputy Public Prosecutor’s Office first,” Rusdi (above) told Malaysiakini.

The investigation into the alleged assault will follow due process, he said, with the findings to be presented to the deputy public prosecutor for further action.

“We will do our utmost to thoroughly investigate the matter for the benefit of all parties involved,” Rusdi assured, emphasising the police’s commitment to a fair and impartial probe.

Two police reports

This came after he told the media two days ago that the disabled man lodged another report to state that he did not want to prolong the matter.

Rusdi had said that the 46-year-old filed the new report at 9.45pm on May 28.

Based on the police report, the incident stemmed from a misunderstanding over instructions given while repositioning a vehicle.

Although authorities did not name the individuals involved, it is widely believed that an escort of Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim was the one who allegedly assaulted the driver at a hotel in the Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur area.

The alleged assault quickly gained traction on social media after reports of the incident went viral.

On May 29, Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department chief Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain confirmed that the victim had lodged an initial police report at 1pm on May 28 regarding the purported attack.

Shuhaily revealed that no arrests had been made yet, but authorities were investigating the case under Section 323 of the Penal Code related to voluntarily causing hurt which carries a maximum one-year jail term, a fine up to RM2,000, or both.

In a related development, Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim has responded to the alleged incident and revealed that it involved a police security team.

Calling for a thorough probe and justice to be accorded to the victim, his highness stressed that he does not condone illegal actions or acts of intimidation. - Mkini
