Perikatan Nasional has backed Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim's remark that the police should continue with their investigation into the allegation that a bodyguard of a royal assaulted a disabled person.
Opposition chief whip Takiyuddin Hassan said unlike in a civil case, which can be stopped and settled at any point upon agreement between the parties involved, criminal cases, especially those which fall under the Penal Code, should be probed and acted upon once a report has been received.
"The rule of law and the role of the authorities as the guardians of public safety must be upheld, and seen as being upheld in all circumstances, regardless of position, influence or status of the involved parties.
"PN believes that issues like selective prosecution, bias, cronyism, and institutional bullying have been allowed to fester for too long without a solution. It paints our whole political scenario, including in the country's image in the global view," Takiyuddin said in a statement.
On Wednesday, Hassan said there was no such thing as “settling” a criminal case just because the complainant said so.
The PKR lawmaker was commenting on the alleged assault of a person with disabilities by the bodyguard of a royal household.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Rusdi Mohd Isa revealed that the victim had since lodged another report, stating he did not want to prolong the matter.
Worsens perception
Takiyuddin further said the latest incident has caused discomfort and distrust in the government's ability to protect the rakyat and ensure justice for all.
"The authority's failure to act in this case will worsen the existing perception, especially in terms of professionalism and quality of service.
"PN fully supports calls for the police to continue their investigations into the case and take the necessary action.
"A society that fails to defend and protect its meek and weak members will be destroyed at the hands of its arrogant and deified members," he said.
Previously, former law minister Zaid Ibrahim and human rights group Lawyers for Liberty also concurred with Hassan on the matter. - Mkini
