Azam Baki's term as MACC chief extended another year

Azam Baki’s term as MACC chief has been extended by another year.

Chief Secretary to the Government Mohd Zuki Ali announced this in a statement today.

Zuki said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong consented to the extension, which is effective May 12.

This is the graftbuster’s second tenure extension since turning 60 last year. He will be celebrating his 61st birthday on May 12.

Azam was appointed MACC chief in 2020, replacing Latheefa Koya who resigned after the change in government that year.

Azam played a key role in MACC’s investigations on 1MDB-related matters and led the probe into the Port Klang Free Zone affair.

As MACC chief, he oversaw probes against DAP chairperson Lim Guan Eng, Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman and Bersatu and its leadership, among others.

The agency under his lead also probed SRC International trial judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali over alleged conflict of interest and misconduct.

Azam was also at the centre of controversy over a share ownership scandal that raised questions on conflict of interest and whether it was commensurate with his income as a public servant.

Azam claimed the shares were not his but purchased by his brother in his name, prompting the Securities Commission to also get involved over the possible misuse of his trading account. - Mkini
