Chief sec: Fewer graft convictions among civil servants since pandemic

In expressing disagreement with the popular view that corruption is rife in the civil service, the chief secretary to the government has cited the waning number of civil servants convicted in corruption cases since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mohd Zuki Ali reportedly said there were only 74 convictions in corruption cases involving civil servants in 2020, and this number fell to 70 in 2021, plunging further to 21 in 2022.

“This shows that civil servants still practise a work culture with integrity to ensure good and transparent governance in the public service,” he was quoted as saying by Utusan Malaysia.

He added that the government views seriously that a small group can damage the image of the public service.

The government, Zuki said, has taken disciplinary action against 8,556 underperforming civil servants in 2022 to prove its commitment to integrity.

“The biggest offence was work absenteeism involving 21.5 percent or 1,839 civil servants, followed by 3.19 percent or 273 civil servants who were charged with drug abuse.”

Zuki said those taken to court for power abuse and corruption made up only 1.64 percent or 140 civil servants in 2022, adding that the total number of civil servants terminated from their jobs from 2020 to 2022 was 897.

He also pointed to the establishment of the Special Cabinet Committee on National Governance, chaired by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and managed by the MACC.

This would help identify and combat weaknesses in the civil service that lead to fund leakages, wastage, abuse of power, malpractices and corruption, he added. - Mkini
