PETALING JAYA: Over 1,000 chocolate confectionary products worth about RM23,000 were seized by the domestic trade and cost of living ministry in Labuan yesterday for having “No Palm Oil” or “Palm Oil Free” labels.

In a statement, the ministry’s officials in the federal territory said 1,134 products, worth RM23,704, were seized.

The case is being investigated under the Trade Descriptions (Prohibition of Use of Statement, Expression or Indication) (Oil Palm Product and Palm Oil Goods) Regulations 2022, which came into force on March 12.

The law punishes statements or indicators that discriminate against or encourage the boycott of products containing palm oil, the country’s main commodity.

It provides for a RM250,000 fine or up to five years’ jail upon conviction.

Last week, the ministry’s officials in Putrajaya seized RM897 worth of ice cream with “No Palm Oil” printed on the plastic packaging.

Minister Armizan Mohd Ali said strict action would be enforced against any importer, distributor, or retailer found selling imported products that violate regulations. - FMT
