CID chief dismisses 'grand conspiracy' claim in attacks on footballers

Bukit Aman has dismissed claims shared on social media of a grand conspiracy involving politicians, police and gang leaders, behind the attacks against three footballers - Akhyar Rashid, Faisal Halim and Safiq Rahim.

Speaking to reporters, Bukit Aman Criminal Investigations Department director Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said at least one social media account using the name “Muhammad Imran Suresh” that shared such claims, was found to be a fake profile.

“The inspector-general of police had ordered me to identify the account. One of them is fake.

“We are (still) monitoring,” Shuhaily told a press conference at Bukit Aman today.

“We will request assistance from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (to identify the real owners),” he added.

Commenting further, Shuhaily said police have identified a common modus operandi in the three attacks, but have yet to establish whether all cases were related.

Previously, Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain reportedly said Bukit Aman is in the process of identifying “Muhammad Suresh Imran” over claims he made following the acid attack against Harimau Malaya player Faisal Halim last weekend.

Screenshots of the original posting had alleged ties between politicians and “gang leaders” connected to the local football scene.

The posting also linked royalty to the conspiracy.

Malaysiakini has not been able to verify the claims.

‘Refrain from extreme reactions’

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil called on football supporters not to take matters into their own hands and launch any attacks on social media.

“We do not wish for such incidents (attacks) to happen, including to the players, so I urge netizens to exercise moderation and refrain from extreme reactions,” the government spokesperson told a press conference in Putrajaya today.

He reiterated that MCMC will act against any complaints received, as well as work in cooperation with authorities including the police if there were any requests for assistance. - Mkini
