DAP MP: Thanks PAS for backing Teresa, but we reap what you sow

DAP lawmaker Lim Lip Eng is appreciative that PAS has expressed support in the wake of a death threat against Teresa Kok but could not help but point out the perils of toxic politics.

He noted that PAS leaders continue to be instrumental in sowing hatred against DAP with their vitriol, which can radicalise impressionable minds.

“I am grateful for the support but it would be remiss of me not to point out how some have painted DAP as consisting of unpatriotic non-Malays, hell-bent on upending the Federal Constitution, removing the special privileges for the bumiputera and undermining Islam. The list goes on and on,” he told Malaysiakini.

The most recent example, Lim (above) said, was PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s speech in Kuala Kubu Baharu, where he accused DAP of plotting to dilute Malay political power.

He said PAS leaders and others exploit these “unwarranted and unsubstantiated” claims for political purposes but their actions can lead to severe consequences.

“So please do not play with fire. There is no point in battling for the throne when the kingdom is razed to the ground,” he added.

Bullets in the mail

Kok, who is also DAP vice-chairperson, said she believes that the bullets in her mailbox were related to the false accusation that originated from a PAS leader accusing her of being anti-Islam which is still circulating on social media.

“I never thought that I would receive bullets,” the Seputeh MP said, adding that she had grown accustomed to other forms of threats and harassment in the past.

“I have told the police that my case might have to do with this post which keeps getting recycled even though the content was found defamatory by the High Court in 2020,” she told Malaysiakini.

Kok also revealed that the police told her that the perpetrator most likely acted alone and was not linked to any groups.

The DAP leader stressed that the latest threat would not daunt her and recalled the incident when Molotov cocktails were lobbed into her parents’ house in 2008.

Kok also recounted how a group of NGOs had offered a reward to those who were willing to slap her in 2014.

At the time, the lawyer representing the group contended that the offer was not an offence unless someone took it up. - Mkini
