GEORGE TOWN: A two-hour downpour triggered flash floods in Bandar Baru Air Itam this evening.
Checks by FMT showed that the entire stretch of Thean Teik Highway heading to Batu Lanchang Lane was submerged at about 9.30pm.
A video recorded by a resident showed torrents of muddy water gushing down the hill near Farlim market. The hill is being cleared for a road project.
The nearby Sungai Dondang also burst its banks, flooding unoccupied homes along Taman Thean Teik. At least 7cm of water was observed in most areas.
The floodwaters receded as the rain slowed to a light shower at about 10pm, making all three lanes on Thean Teik Highway accessible to traffic.
However, large swathes of mud were still visible.
State infrastructure, transport and digital committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari told FMT rainfall data at the road construction site recorded 67mm of water.
He said he also suspected that high tide contributed to the flash floods.
According to the drainage and irrigation department’s website, rain exceeding 60mm over a two to four-hour duration may cause flash floods.
The department’s portal showed that Sungai Air Itam, whose tributary flows through Bandar Baru Air Itam, hit warning levels at 9.45pm (6.9m), while Sungai Pinang reached warning levels at 10pm (2.55m).
DID rainfall data also showed that the Jalan Gangsa station in Green Lane recorded 88mm of rainfall for the entire day, with 19mm recorded between 9pm and 10pm, which was classified as “alert” level rain. - FMT
