GIP: True or false? PKR MP wants PM to answer 'simple issue'

 

A PKR lawmaker, known for his rebellious streak, has called on Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to answer a “simple issue” on the planned acquisition of Malaysia Airports Berhad (MAHB) by a consortium with purported Zionist links.

Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim said Anwar must address the allegations raised by his former close ally, activist Hishamuddin Rais.

“Hishamuddin and other activists from the Palestinian Solidarity Secretariat (SSP) have good intentions in raising this issue. They are all patriotic. They just want the government to answer, especially Anwar who is also the finance minister.

“It’s a simple issue. Is the government’s claim that it will sell part of MAHB’s shares to Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) true or not? If true, say it’s true. If not, say it’s not. Period!” he added in a statement this evening.

Earlier, Hishamuddin claimed that Anwar “greeting and embracing” Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh was just “a show” to cover up the issue concerning the deal made with Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), which pro-Israel company BlackRock wholly owns.

Meanwhile, Hassan (above) said the SSP activists and MPs from both sides of the divide must speak up on this issue because the government and Malaysians have been firm supporters of the Palestinian people.

“As a government MP, I strongly believe in Anwar’s commitment to helping the Palestinian cause.

“I don’t believe Anwar was just acting in front of Hamas leaders, but behind them, the government plans to sell 30 percent of MAHB shares, which manages 38 airports in Malaysia, to the US pro-Israel company BlackRock’s GIP.

“So for this issue not to prolong and for Anwar’s good name to be preserved at home and internationally on the Palestinian issue, no one else can answer except Anwar Ibrahim himself,” he added.

On May 17, Anwar dismissed reports saying that 25 percent of MAHB shares would be acquired by a pro-Zionist foreign company.

Calling the claims baseless, he accused the opposition of trying to incite the public against the government.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke had also asserted that the claim was unfounded. - Mkini
