Govt did not order probe against Bloomberg report - Fahmi

Communication Minister Fahmi Fadzil has clarified that the government did not instigate the ongoing police investigation into Bloomberg's casino article.

According to Fahmi, the investigation came as part of the procedure after a law firm representing Berjaya Corporation Bhd filed a police report.

He stressed that neither the government nor his ministry issued an order or lodged a report.

"Based on the media articles I saw, Berjaya lodged the report and not the government, this ministry, or the MCMC (Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission)," Fahmi added.

On April 25, Bloomberg reported that Malaysia was discussing opening a casino within Forest City with business tycoons, a colossal project valued at US$100 billion (RM480 billion) in Johor.

The report said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had met with Berjaya Corp founder Vincent Tan and Genting Group’s Lim Kok Thay to discuss the matter.

With Anwar dismissing the matter and Berjaya refuting the claims, Fahmi said the cabinet would discuss action against the report.

The media also reported that the police would question the chief editor of the news agency following a report lodged by Tan’s lawyer.

Separately, Fahmi said the Defence Ministry would publish an initial report tomorrow on the two naval helicopters that collided mid-air in Lumut, Perak on April 23.

“Defence Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin has shared some updates regarding the matter, and he said that the initial report of the incident will be published tomorrow,” he added.

Fahmi stated that the full incident report is expected to be completed in two to three weeks. - Mkini
