A guideline is needed for the maintenance of old trees in Kuala Lumpur to ensure the fallen tree incident that killed one person yesterday does not repeat.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa said most of the trees in the city are between 50 and 80 years old.
“It is high time, given the uncertain weather.
“These trees may look strong but something needs to be done to ensure public safety.
“We expect to work on the guidelines the soonest possible,” she was quoted as saying by the New Straits Times during a visit to the scene of the incident with Kuala Lumpur mayor Kamarulzaman Mat Salleh.
Yesterday, one died while another was injured after bad weather caused a tree to fall on their vehicles in front of Shangri-La Hotel, Jalan Sultan Ismail.
In a statement, Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department assistant director for operations M Fatta M Amin said the fallen tree affected 17 vehicles, and debris from the tree blocked a monorail track, while a nearby bus stop was damaged.
Rapid KL confirmed that its monorail service between the KL Sentral and Medan Tuanku stations had been suspended as a tree branch fell on the rail tracks near the Raja Chulan station at 2.20pm.
Meanwhile, Zaliha said the uprooted tree had been in the care of Menara IMC.
“Inspection on this tree is done once every two years with arborists registered with City Hall.
“Menara IMC liaises directly with City Hall’s landscape department to conduct checks,” she said. - Mkini
