Home Ministry: First batch of police body cams to arrive in June

The first batch of body cameras will arrive in June this year, said Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

“I requested for it to be expedited. Don’t delay it further until next year. The budget has been available for a long time, but the procurement process has changed several times.

“I urge for it to be resolved immediately. I expect, if we follow our timeline, the first delivery should happen within this June itself,” he told the media at Defence Services Asia and National Security Asia 2024 exhibitions at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibitions Centre in Kuala Lumpur today.

He spoke to reporters after the Home Ministry inked a memorandum of understanding with local company Mindwave Consultancy Sdn Bhd for the acquisition of long-awaited body cameras to be utilised by police officers on the ground.

The ministry's secretary-general Ruji Ubi signed the over RM28 million deal, one of 12 high-impact contracts worth RM1.2 billion with 12 different companies to improve the police forces’ facilities.

Saifuddin and his deputy Shamsul Anuar Nasarah witnessed the signing ceremony.

RM30m allocated

Earlier this year, Saifuddin said the tender process was in its final stages.

He also said the police were expected to utilise body cameras fully starting next year.

The government had approved an allocation of RM30 million in 2021 for police to obtain body cameras, which officers will use in their daily policing duties.

When asked about the specifications of the body cameras, Saifuddin said he trusts the procurement committee have properly vetted the requirements before awarding the contract to the company.

On Oct 27, 2023, Saifuddin announced that the police force is expected to fully utilise body cameras beginning in 2025.

In a written parliamentary reply, he said this was based on the timeline for the government to procure and test the equipment, as well as provide training to police officers on how to use them. - Mkini
