If Bersatu sacks me, I'm free to choose other parties - Selat Klang rep

Selat Klang assemblyperson Abdul Rashid Asari is ready to be fired from Bersatu as he thinks that will make it easier for him to join another party.

This came following Bersatu’s claim that Rashid's and Tanjong Karang MP Zulkafperi Hanapi's memberships were immediately revoked for attending the Pakatan Harapan campaign in Kuala Kubu Baharu as it violated the party’s constitution.

However, Rashid (above), who is former Bersatu Selangor chairperson, insisted that even though he spoke on the government’s stage during the campaign, his membership cannot be revoked, as giving a speech did not conflict with the party’s constitution.

"(Before) I gave a speech, I checked the constitution and there is not a single clause about giving a speech.

"There is no provision (in the party’s constitution) where I cannot give a speech, so if there is no provision, then I will give a speech," he said in an interview with Malaysiakini.

He added that Clause 10 of the Bersatu Constitution clearly stated that the party can only dismiss or terminate a membership if the member publicly announces that he or she is leaving the party or joining other parties.

Rashid reiterated that he never left the party or joined any other political party.

‘No instructions’

On May 9, Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin said the duo must vacate their seats to make way for by-elections in their constituencies.

“They spoke on the Harapan stage during the Kuala Kubu Baharu campaign. Based on our (Bersatu’s) constitution, they automatically cease to be members,” Hamzah said.

In response, Rashid said that was just Bersatu’s opinion and if the disciplinary board dismisses him, his position as his constituency’s representative will not be affected.

He also cited the Federal Constitution’s stipulation that only the speaker can declare the seat of any elected representative vacant.

In a related matter, Rashid said Bersatu's recent constitutional amendment cannot be used to accuse him of misconduct.

"(If) They said I disobeyed the instructions of the supreme council or something. They should have them in writing.

"Until today, there have been no instructions, and (I) have not violated any. No written instruction that says you cannot give a speech," he said.

Nevertheless, should Bersatu fire him, he said he is ready to face it.

"I don't care if I get fired; fire me. If I'm fired, I'm free; I can choose other parties," Rashid said, adding that he has no plans to join any other party for now. - Mkini
