IMPARTIALITY IN BUSINESS - 2

It goes without saying that making impartial business decisions is important. However, in a world where cash is king, we sometimes lose objectivity. It is critical to understand how making unethical or impartial business decisions can affect your brand in the long run.

While you may feel as though your business choice won't openly be known because you operate with the highest discretion... in the end, you could get caught and the PR cleanup may not save your brand.

Consider Exxon Mobil, they were under fire for hiding documentation that reports specific details as it related to oil spill damage in Arkansas... and the city of Detroit disabling more than 40% of their citizens the capability to have water are great examples of brand integrity destroyers.

Key reasons to remain impartial...

You May Cause Harm.

Considering the above two examples, a decision that was made on paper had real life results and caused not only discomfort but harm to some. By being impartial, you can rest assured knowing that if harm does come, it wasn't because of an impartial business decision.

Legal Ramifications.

If you make an impartial business decision that does happen to cause harm, and you are found out... legal ramifications may result. No brand desires to be a part of a lawsuit. Lawsuits are not only expensive, but the details and results are heavily documented. It is logged in the land of time forever and directly connected to your brand. (Consider OJ Simpson... even though he was acquitted, he will always be known for what he was accused of. His brand has suffered too many public and legally noted instances for the case to be ignored and he is "branded" for life).

Complete Destruction.

While larger companies may be able to handle a brand mishap or unfortunate mistake or two... more than likely, yours cannot. A poor business decision could result in the complete destruction of your brand and starting over. Even if you start over under another brand name, you may personally have to stand far from the product because these incidents can sometimes spill over and damage your personal brand as well.

Making impartial business decisions is always best practice. While some opportunities may strongly tempt you to make alternative decisions, always consider the above three when making those choices. The last thing you want is to have your brand forever connected to a moment or instance that occurred as a result of impartiality.
