Islamophobia must be addressed for global unity - Egyptian scholar

Resolution to combat Islamophobia must be a top priority for Muslim leaders, scholars, and intellectuals to ensure harmony and unity among global communities.

Egypt’s Dar Al-Ifta Syariah Department head Ali Omar Al-Farouq said Islamophobia is increasingly being propagated by a minority of individuals who fear the spread of Islam, particularly in this era of rapid technological advancement in social media.

“These groups attempt to influence those interested in embracing Islam by spreading negative narratives, suggesting that Islam promotes violence and extremism. They also claim that Islam does not advocate unity and peace,” he said in an interview with Bernama Arab Desk yesterday.

Ali said that anyone who studies how Muslims lived in society during the time of Prophet Muhammad would realise what these groups are propagating is completely contrary to Islamic teachings.

He said the Islamic state established during the time of the prophet was based on security and coexistence among people of various religions who lived peacefully, as evidenced by the signing of the Medina Charter.

On the 2024 Asian Ulama Council meeting, which was officiated by Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Ali said the event has become a key platform for discussing issues relevant to the Muslim community in this era.

“These meetings are essential for correcting misconceptions about Islam and at the same time, unifying all perspectives,” he said.

He also expressed hope that subsequent meetings would be held to ensure that the ideas discussed could be accepted and implemented in the future.

The event was attended by Muslim World League's (MWL) secretary-general, Sheikh Mohammed Abdulkarim Al-Issa who is also the chairperson of the Organisation of Muslim Scholars.

It was organised by the office of the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) and Islamic Development Department Malaysia (Jakim) in collaboration with the MWL.
