ISKANDAR PUTERI: The elevated automated rapid transit (ART) system planned for Johor Bahru will have 32 stations with a total distance of more than 50km, Johor public works, transport, infrastructure and communications committee chairman Fazli Salleh said.
“We chose the RM7 billion elevated ART system as it can be completed more quickly than the light rail transit. We want it to be operational with the rapid transit system link scheduled to begin in January 2027.
“There will be three lines – the 14.8km Iskandar Puteri line, the Skudai line (18.8km) and the Tebrau line (14km).
“The study is underway and will be completed in August. After which, it will be presented to the Cabinet,” he told reporters outside the Johor assembly building in Kota Iskandar here.
He also said the QR code system to be used for immigration clearance at the customs, immigration and quarantine complex and border checkpoints would begin mid next month, with the first phase involving factory bus passengers.
Fazli added that the system would be expanded in stages for all travellers and would be fully implemented by the end of this year.
“The first phase will involve an estimated 5,000 passengers on 120 factory buses during each peak period.
“For public travellers, including those with personal vehicles, the QR code will be used for groups.
“Passports are still required but need not be shown, it will be enough to show the QR code,” he said, adding that authorities were optimistic the system would smoothen the flow of travellers at both entry points between Malaysia and Singapore. - FMT
