Kit Siang: Situation different, but DAP still on right track

Some feel that DAP has compromised too much since becoming part of the coalition government but Lim Kit Siang believes it is still on the right track.

Speaking to Malaysiakini at MIC’s election war room in Kuala Kubu Baharu this afternoon, the former DAP secretary-general said the party is now operating under different circumstances.

“I think DAP has gone through a transition from being in the opposition to the government, and is facing different circumstances.

“I continue to support the present leadership. I don’t see that the leadership has deviated from DAP’s principles but is working under different circumstances,” he added.

Lim, 83, however, refused to comment on political scientist Wong Chin Huat suggesting that one option for DAP is to express support for Pakatan Harapan chairperson Anwar Ibrahim’s premiership without being in the government.

According to Wong, DAP lawmakers could become backbenchers.

Pointing out that he is retired, Lim said he preferred not to comment on various “theories and possibilities”.

“The present generation which emerged must face these challenges,” he added.

In a recent interview with Malaysiakini, Wong said DAP is seen by its traditional supporters as having compromised on two grounds - reduction of inter-ethnic inequality in legal and policy terms; and the pursuit of reforms and justice on corruption.

Lim also paid tribute to his former political nemesis, the late S Samy Vellu, who was MIC president for three decades.

The DAP veteran said while the two of them disagreed on politics, he admired the former MIC leader for his outspokenness.

“There were issues which he dared to talk about when others shied away,” he added.
