KKB BLOG | DAP holds memorial service for Kee Hiong

DAY 13 | Two days left before Kuala Kubu Baharu folk cast their ballot.

We will report from time to time from the ground.

Door-to-door campaign sees uptick in support for Pang

8.40pm: The graph of people's support for the Pakatan Harapan candidate shows an encouraging uptrend from the results of the face-to-face campaign conducted by the party machinery ahead of the last days of the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election campaign.

Selangor Harapan chairperson Amirudin Shari says the support has been rising especially after the candidate and party machinery of the unity government attended to every segment of voters including the Orang Asli.

"The campaign is going well and it can be said that we have found voters in all areas with the focus on door-to-door campaign methods besides being assisted through social media and speeches.

"As of last night, this approach turned out to be effective when the graph of support for the Harapan candidate from all community groups including the Orang Asli shows a very significant increase," he says, according to Bernama.

Remembering Kee Hiong: Memorial service held in KKB

8pm: Kuala Kubu Bharu, Selangor - Approximately 200 people attend a memorial service for the late DAP assemblyperson Lee Kee Hiong today.

Attendees include DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang, national chairperson Lim Guan Eng, secretary-general Anthony Loke, vice-chairperson Teresa Kok, Selangor DAP chairperson Gobind Singh Deo, as well as Lee Kee Hiong's husband, Lee Jenn Huei.

Some residents take turns on stage to share their memories of Lee and recite poetry.

Loke: Perhaps, PN is sensing defeat

6.39pm: Amid accusations that Pakatan Harapan was employing corrupt practices in Kuala Kubu Baharu, DAP says it probably meant the opposition was conceding defeat.

“Perhaps, they can sense defeat. If he (Takiyuddin Hassan) is saying that, it probably means he is throwing in the towel.

“What else can I say? We are doing everything by the book. If the opposition is dissatisfied, they can file an election petition after the polls.

“But Takiyuddin is talking about filing for a petition even before the by-election is over. Strange indeed,” says DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke.

Stop using desperate, dirty, dangerous tactics, PN told

4.10pm: DAP national chairperson Lim Guan Eng has urged Perikatan Nasional to stop employing "desperate, dirty and dangerous" tactics of using race and religion when campaigning for the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election.

In a statement, the Bagan MP urges the opposition coalition's chief Muhyiddin Yassin to rein in the likes of PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari, and Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal, whom he says had played such politics in the lead-up to the by-election.

DAP national chairperson Lim Guan Eng

"Wan Ahmad Fayhsal had tried to strike fear and insecurity amongst Malay voters by repeating the lie two days ago that 1.2 million Chinese tourists had overstayed between 2018 and 2021 and did not leave the country.

"The lie that 1.2 million Chinese tourists did not leave Malaysia had been denied repeatedly in the past by all home ministers, including current opposition leader and Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin when he was the home minister," Lim says today.

He further cites Fadhli's attack against government candidate Pang Sock Tao over her vernacular education, and his failure to apologise over the episode.

"Using lies to perpetuate racist and extremist rhetoric has never helped to make people’s lives easier.

Teach govt a lesson, PN leader urges Indians

4.05pm: A Perikatan Nasional leader urges Indian voters in Kuala Kubu Baharu to cast their ballots in favour of his coalition, alleging the government was silencing legitimate criticisms.

Taking to TikTok, Malaysian Indian People Party (MIPP) national information chief M Suthan alleges that many complained that criticisms against the government on the social media platform were being removed.

MIPP national information chief M Suthan

“Our government leaders are stressed because they can’t seem to answer questions posed by the Indian community.

“Freedom of expression applies to all, but the government is abusing their power due to fear of losing in Kuala Kubu Baharu,” he says.

Wan Azizah: Can follow TikTok but check facts first

3.45pm: Kuala Kubu Baharu, Selangor - Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, wife of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, says young voters on TikTok must be careful with the information they find on the social media platform.

"We’re here to seek support for Pakatan Harapan candidate Pang Sock Tao to win on May 11. I ask everyone to support this young person.

"Alhamdulillah, there is the support of young voters. However, we are afraid that sometimes they follow TikTok and are attracted to untrue content.

"We can follow TikTok but check the facts first," she says while on the campaign trail today.

Wan Azizah, more affectionately known as Kak Wan, also says all parties need to accept the reality that this country is a plural country.

"If someone says 'Malay, Malay, Malay' we cannot accept that.

"For our country to develop together, we have to accept the reality that we are a plural country in Malaysia," she says.

Indie candidate claims being threatened to withdraw

3.05pm: Kuala Kubu Baharu, Selangor - Independent candidate Nyau Ke Xin claims to have been threatened to withdraw from the election, but she states that she has no intention of reporting the matter to the authorities and chooses to ignore it.

During a press conference in Kuala Kubu Baharu, Nyau responds to media inquiries about her previous claim of being threatened to withdraw from the election.

She explains that the threats came via phone calls, and she did not record them as evidence.

“They didn’t do anything to me, so I just want to let it go. I’m not going to lodge a report also. If I entertain them, it’s only going to be hard on me. So, better for me to ignore it,” she says.

PKR boycott? S’gor MB and I are here – Fahmi

2.15pm: Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil dismisses claims that PKR was not putting much effort into the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election campaign.

“Selangor MB often comes to the ground. In fact, I learnt that the next state executive council meeting this week will be held in Kuala Kubu Baharu,” he says.

Vote Harapan for continued development - Wan Azizah

2pm: Kuala Kubu Baharu constituents need to support Pakatan Harapan candidate Pang Sock Tao to ensure the continuity of development in the area, says Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

The PKR Advisory Council chairperson says choosing a candidate aligned with the state and federal governments in the by-election will also enable the residents’ standard of living to continue improving.

“I urge everyone to support Pang for the continuity of the service provided by the late Lee (Kee Hiong). I knew Lee and I know how she served, and now we have a young person to take over,” she says, as quoted by Bernama.

Meanwhile, Pang, 31, says that with less than 48 hours left for campaigning, she will redouble her efforts to approach as many voters as possible to ensure a victory for Harapan.

“I appeal to voters in KKB to give me the chance to serve, and I am committed to continuing Lee’s legacy,” she says.

No talks of admitting ex-Bersatu reps yet

1.55pm: Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil says there has been no discussion about admitting Tanjong Karang MP Zulkafperi Hanapi and Selat Kelang assemblyperson Abdul Rashid Asari into Pakatan Harapan after the duo lost their Bersatu membership.

“We have not discussed this. We will wait and see because it’s a developing story.

“And we are unsure of the full facts. Let’s clarify a few things first,” the PKR leader says.

‘Hypocrites’: Ahmad Maslan chides opposition

11am: Umno supreme council member Ahmad Maslan slams the opposition who made fun of Umno’s collaboration with Pakatan Harapan using the term “Umdap”.

“Fact of the matter is, PAS cooperated with DAP way longer than us. Bersatu was initially with DAP, won the 14th general election, and became government for 22 months.

“But when Umno joined the coalition government, they called us Umdap.

“These people are hypocrites of the highest order,” says the deputy minister on X.

‘Indian voters won’t take opposition’s bait’

9am: PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail expresses confidence that Indian voters will give their full support to Pakatan Harapan candidate Pang Sock Tao in the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election.

“Although certain quarters are asking the Indian community to remain neutral and not vote, I don’t think they will easily fall for the bait.

“I am very confident that Indian voters will act wisely and step forward for their future and well-being by electing a representative from the unity government on May 11,” Saifuddin (above) said at a meeting with leaders of the Kuala Kubu Bharu Indian community in Hulu Selangor yesterday.

More than 100 Indian community leaders consisting of NGO representatives, political parties and school parent teacher associations attended the meeting organised by the Hulu Selangor Parliament coordinator Dr Sathia Prakash Nadarajan. - Mkini
