DAY 10 | It’s the 10th day of the 14-day campaigning period for the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election before voters head to the polls on May 11.
We will report from time to time from the ground.
PN candidate announces manifesto
6.15pm: Kuala Kubu Baharu, Selangor - Perikatan Nasional candidate Khairul Azhari Saut announces his campaign manifesto at an event here today.
His manifesto covers five main areas:
Demanding Sustainable & Resilient Development
Ensuring Environmental Sustainability & Green Environment
Empowering Local Economy
Harnessing the Potential of Progressive Youth & Women
Advocating for Minority Communities
He also explained that the reason for announcing the campaign manifesto so late was to gather public opinion.
Among the attendees at today’s event were Selangor PN chairperson Azmin Ali, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan, Selangor Gerakan president Henry Teoh, and Malaysian Indian People Party (MIPP) president P Punithan.
Ex-estate workers want govt to resolve 26-year housing issue
5:40pm: Kuala Kubu Baharu - About 50 voters from Ladang Sungai Belata gather at a press conference in Kuala Kubu Baharu to urge the Housing and Local Government Ministry to resolve their 26-year-long housing problem.
Parti Sosialis Malaysia deputy president S Arutchelvan says 64 former workers at the estate received termination notices in 1994 and signed sales and purchase agreements with Lembah Beringin Sdn Bhd in 2001 for low-cost housing.
“But Lembah Beringin Sdn Bhd went bankrupt in 2003 and in 2005, Lembah Beringin’s parent company, Land & General Bhd, promised bungalow lots for the 64 former workers. So far, there hasn’t been much development,” says Arutchelvan.
Parti Rakyat Malaysia candidate Hafizah Zainudin and independent candidate Nyau Ke Xin are also at the press conference.
Nyau says she will try as hard as possible to resolve the issue if she wins the election, while Hafizah says she will work with the state government to find a solution.
‘Indians now more bold in voicing dissatisfaction against govt’
3pm: Batang Kali - The Indian community in Kuala Kubu Baharu is no longer silent in expressing their dissatisfaction with the federal government, says Perikatan Nasional secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin.
He says the community is now more bold in supporting PN.
“They are brave enough to support someone and bold enough to criticise all government policies.
“In the past, they were quite ‘introverted’ and did not want to talk about their dissatisfaction with the government. This definitely gives PN candidates an opportunity to gain support from this community in this by-election,” he said while attending the PN Friendly Meeting with the Indian community in Batang Kali last night.
DAP rep condemns probe into Beng Hock activists
12.30pm: DAP’s Seri Kembangan assemblyperson Wong Siew Ki has condemned a probe into Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement (TBH-ADA) activists over their “search for missing Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim”.
“Everyone can seek justice in their own way. And we (DAP) absolutely do not oppose this but support it. This is an issue of disrespecting human rights," he said after the activists were summoned to the Hulu Selangor District Police Headquarters yesterday.
TBH-ADA chairperson Ng Yap Hwa, and Teoh’s sister Lee Lan, entered the police station to provide testimony at around 11.30pm last night, accompanied by lawyer Ngeow Chow Ying.
"These two criminal cases are related to disturbing public order and peace, so it is about their poster. Someone reported that this poster contains elements of disturbing public order and social harmony,” the lawyer said.
Ng claimed their "search for the prime minister" does not involve the 3R (royalty, race, religion), therefore, he urged the Pakatan Harapan government to explain the investigation under Section 504 of the Penal Code for intentionally disturbing public order and Section 4A of the 1954 Election Offenses Act for displaying a poster with malicious intent.
Lee Lan said she had been arrested during the 2010 Galas by-election during the BN era but didn't expect it would happen again under Harapan rule.
‘No order or permission to use king’s image’
12pm: Pakatan Harapan’s Kuala Kubu Baharu election director Ng Sze Han says there was neither an order nor permission given to use Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar’s photo in any part of its campaign.
“It was reported that the picture was placed on a vehicle carrying a banner with the Harapan flag.
“As the Harapan campaign director for the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election, I would like to emphasise that our party never ordered or allowed this action by any Harapan campaign staff.
“The act of using the king’s picture in the campaign is inappropriate and should not have happened,” Ng adds.
Duo to be charged over display of king’s photo
10.30am: Two men who were arrested for displaying the photo of Yang di-Pertuan Agong on a vehicle for the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election campaign will be charged today, Bernama reports.
Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain states both individuals, aged 66, will be charged at the Kuala Kubu Baharu Magistrate’s Court.
“The charges against the two men were filed after investigation papers were submitted to the deputy public prosecutor’s office yesterday,” he says when contacted.
He adds that the charges would be brought under Section 4A(1) of the Election Offences Act 1954 for malicious intent.
PN candidate has ‘underdog’ advantage - T’ganu MB
10am: Having Perikatan Nasional cast in the “underdog” category in the Kuala Kubu Baharu polls will give the coalition an advantage, Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Shamsuri Mokhtar says.
“There is an advantage when going in as an underdog. Just like in a football match, the winner or champion wants to defend the title, but that is more difficult than seizing it.
“We are aware that we are underdogs but, with the available data, we plan strategically to identify our weaknesses from the previous election… we can win if we can solve the issues that still affect the people.
“Also, voter turnout must be quite high, especially Malay voters," he tells reporters after a meeting with PN and the Indian community at Liga Mas, Batang Kali, last night.
PAS’ experience in managing outstation voters in the Kelantan and Terengganu elections will also help in this by-election, he adds. - Mkini
