MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki has confirmed that there are no plans to arrest former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad for now, citing an ongoing investigation.
“We have no intention to arrest him yet since the investigation is ongoing,” he told reporters after attending the launch of the National Anti-Corruption Strategy programme in Putrajaya today.
On April 25, Azam said the investigation against the former Langkawi MP was linked to MACC’s request for Mahathir’s sons, Mokhzani and Mirzan, to disclose their assets.
Meanwhile, he said the anti-graft agency is monitoring the RM5.21 million project to upgrade public infrastructure under the supervision of the Hulu Selangor Municipal Council and the Chinese New Village Project in Kuala Kubu Baharu which was announced by Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, for possible elements of corruption.
Azam said the MACC will give attention to media coverage on the matter although it has not received any reports.
“To date, there is no report made yet.
“But we will take what is mentioned in the media, and our complaint centre will take a look if there is any corruption involved,” he added.
Following Nga’s announcement, electoral watchdog Bersih slammed the action and claimed it violated election guidelines.
Other government watchdogs also criticised the move as Kuala Kubu Baharu constituents prepare to cast their ballots on May 11.
Separately, Azam also expressed uncertainty about renewing his contract as MACC commissioner, which is expected to end by May 12.
“Wallahualam. I don’t want to speculate anything. I still have time until May 12. If anyone wants to give me a birthday gift, they can,” he said.
Azam was appointed as commissioner in 2020, replacing Latheefa Koya. - Mkini
