BANGKOK: Two Malaysian men’s doubles pairs advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2024 Thailand Open after winning their second round matches today.

Choong Hon Jian and Haikal Nazri moved into the last eight after easing past Thailand’s Pharanyu Kaosamaang and Worrapol Thongsa-nga 21-17, 21-10 in 33 minutes in their tie at the Nimibutr Stadium here.

They will face Chinese Taipei’s Ming Che Lu and Tang Kai Wei after the pair beat South Koreans Kim Young Hyuk and Wang Chan 23-21, 18-21, 21-14.

Meanwhile, rising men’s doubles pair of Junaidi Arif and Yap Roy King booked their quarter-final berth after defeating Denmark’s Daniel Lundgaard and Mads Vestergaard 21-14, 21-13.

Junaidi and Yap will face Indian top-seeded pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, who advanced to the last eight after a 21-16, 21-11 win against China’s Xie Hao Nan and Zeng Wei Han.

Junaidi said they will stick to their game plan and not put themselves under too much pressure against the Indians.

“We are the underdogs against the top-seeded pair, so they are the ones who should feel the pressure,” he said.

“We just want to enjoy our game and make as few unforced errors as possible. Hopefully, that will be enough for us to win the match.” - FMT
