Netizens: Local KFC alternative DarSa Fried Chicken boasts “Jewish pricing”, ride on racial sentiment

AMID all the fanfare of unveiling its maiden outlet, DarSa Fried Chicken (DFC) which recently opened its maiden outlet in Bukit Beruntung, Selangor has gotten off to a bad pricing review on the social media.

Touted as a business founded in the backyard of sekolah pomdok (tahfiz school) by former Kedah PAS Ulama Council deputy chief Syeikh Zainul Asri Mohd Romli, netizens harped on the ringgit and sen factor as they deemed DFC’s range of products is pricier than KFC’s.

This comes about after a netizen featured DFC on the X platform along with its price range. The post has since generated 3.6 million views at the time of writing.

Another netizen claimed that an online check on the Halal Malaysia Official Portal reveals that DFC does not possess a halal certificate. However, he was informed by netizens in the know that businesses need to operate for at least three months before they are able to apply for the halal certificate.

A presumably fried chicken fan suggested that DFC learn “the art of pricing and taste” from Bumiputera-owned FC Chicken at Kompleks PKNS Shah Alam.

Another curious netizen shared his dining experience at DFC with close-up images of both the fried chicken and receipt of purchase.

Pointing to its opening gimmick which is “full of religious fanfare”, another critical observer also highlighted that the business is purely driven by the “Buy Malay First” (BMF) sentiment which is “not Malaysian-friendly and only to do Malay business”.

He justified that such business model hardly works, alluding to the business sustainability of Ramly Burger because it appeals to Malaysian of all races.

Amid uncompetitive pricing coupled with over-dependency on one segment of the society, a non-Muslin influencer cheekily expressed a gloomy outlook for DFC.
