PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan has taken an early lead in the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election.

Unofficial results on DAP’s website showed PH with 1,190 votes while Perikatan Nasional (PN) has 320 votes.

The by-election is a four-cornered fight involving PH’s Pang Sock Tao,  PN’s Khairul Azhari Saut,  Hafizah Zainuddin of Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) and independent candidate Nyau Ke Xin.

Voting for the by-election ended after all 18 polling centres were officially closed at 6pm.

The polling centre at SJKC Bukit Fraser had closed earlier at 2pm.

A total of 39,269 voters were eligible to cast their votes.

The Election Commission (EC) said there was a 55.79% voter turnout as of 4pm, two hours before the polling centres closed.

All the ballot boxes from 74 polling stations were transported to the official tallying centre at the Hulu Selangor sports complex’s multipurpose hall.

The EC is expected to announce the official results as early as 9pm.

The seat fell vacant following the death of PH assemblyman Lee Kee Hiong, 58, of DAP on March 21 from cancer.

In the state election last August, Lee defeated challengers from PN, PRM and Muda with a majority of 4,119 votes to retain the seat for the third consecutive term. - FMT
