PETALING JAYA: Police have arrested a man in his 40s after he sped off when flagged down by a police mobile patrol unit, leading to a 15km high-speed pursuit.
Seberang Perai Tengah police chief Helmi Aris said the policemen tried to stop the driver, who was suspected of assaulting a man at the Alma business centre near Bukit Mertajam, at 3.30pm, Bernama reported.
“The man sped off when the police officers approached the vehicle and they gave chase. Despite ordering him to pull over, the suspect continued to drive on and even crashed into a motorcycle at the Jalan Jaya Gading junction,” he said in a statement.
He said the man was finally arrested at the Sungai Nyior toll plaza on the Butterworth-Kulim Expressway.
The police found a modified plastic bottle used for taking drugs in the car.
Helmi said the suspect had three previous convictions and tested positive for drugs.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a civil servant in carrying out his duties, and Section 323 of the Penal Code for causing hurt.
The case is also being investigated under Section 15(1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for taking drugs and Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving. - FMT
