Five pro-Palestinian activists were summoned to Sentul district police station today to have their statements recorded over a demonstration outside the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec) in Kuala Lumpur two weeks ago.
Their lawyer Rajesh Nagarajan confirmed that the five members of the Palestinian Solidarity Secretariat (SSP) and “Gegar Amerika” were called up over the gathering at the Defence Services Asia (DSA) and National Security (Natsec) Asia programme, which was held on May 7-9.
Rajesh said the police had just finished recording the five activists’ statements this afternoon and that the probe was being carried out under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.
It was reported that the gathering at Mitec - which involved fake bloodstained bodies wrapped in funeral shrouds - was to oppose the participation of defence companies who furnished Israel with military equipment taking part in the exhibition.
The activists also displayed a banner which read “Stop the US-funded genocide” at the days-long protest.
On May 6, Defence Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin said Malaysia adopts a non-interference approach in the business affairs of any global company from any country.
This came after Bersatu International Bureau chief Saifuddin Abdullah expressed concern over Lockheed Martin and BAE Systems’ inclusion in Natsec Asia 2024, saying the government should prohibit the involvement of two companies supplying weapons to the Israeli military. - Mkini
