The attack on the Ulu Tiram police station is a grim reminder that the threat of terrorism remains high, said Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.
Taking to Instagram, Wong (above) also said the island nation’s authorities have stepped up security measures, including at their entry points.
“Our security agencies will continue to monitor global and regional security developments closely.”
On May 17, two police officers were killed and another was injured in an attack on the Ulu Tiram police station.
State police chief M Kumar confirmed the incident, saying it occurred at 2.45am and involved a masked intruder armed with pistols and a machete.
The police personnel killed in the incident were Ahmad Azza Fahmi Azhar, 22, and Muhammad Syafiq Ahmad Said, 24.
The suspect was reported to have been shot dead at the scene.
While initially saying the suspect was linked to the terror group Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain later said the main assailant shot dead at the scene was not a member of JI.
‘Dangers of self-radicalisation’
Touching on the matter, Wong said the ongoing conflict in the Middle East has been used by global terrorist elements to peddle their radical rhetoric and incite calls for violence.
Self-radicalisation, he added, is a growing concern, especially among the youth.
“Over the past two years, four self-radicalised youths (under the age of 20) were dealt with under Singapore’s Internal Security Act.
“I urge the public to remain vigilant against the terrorism threat. Report any suspicious persons or activities to the authorities immediately,” Wong stressed.
