PETALING JAYA: A 72-year-old Swedish woman is among those injured when a huge tree came crashing down on 17 vehicles along busy Jalan Sultan Ismail in downtown Kuala Lumpur here today.

Dang Wangi deputy police chief Nazron Abd Yusof said the Swedish woman was an e-hailing passenger. The 26-year-old driver of the car was also injured, Bernama reported.

They were taken to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for treatment.

It was earlier reported that a 47-year-old man in one of the cars died in the incident. Police are trying to locate his next of kin.

Nazron said clearance work was being carried out by the fire and rescue department, general defence forces, Kuala Lumpur City Hall and police.

He advised motorists to use alternative routes to reach their destinations until the clearance work is completed.

The tree toppled along Jalan Sultan Ismail, just outside the Concorde Hotel, during heavy rain at 2.19pm.

Branches also damaged a bus stop and fell on the monorail track, disrupting services temporarily.

Meanwhile, federal territories minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa expects the clearing work to be completed tonight.

She said most of the trees in the city were 50 to 80 years old and a private company was looking after them.

She said there was a need to look at the existing procedures to ensure disasters like this do not occur again. - FMT
